For me, turning to prayer during tough times has been a source of strength, comfort, and guidance.
I’ve said more than a few recovery prayers myself over the years. Now, I want to share some that have helped lift my spirit and renew my commitment when I’ve felt weak. May they bring you encouragement on your own journey towards health and healing from addiction.
What is Addiction
Addiction is a chronic disease characterized by drug or alcohol seeking and use that is compulsive, or difficult to control, despite harmful consequences. The initial decision to take drugs or use alcohol is voluntary for most people, but repeated drug use can lead to changes in the brain that challenge an addicted person’s self-control and interfere with their ability to resist intense urges to take drugs. These brain changes can be persistent, which is why drug addiction is considered a “relapsing” disease – people in recovery from drug use disorder will be at risk for returning to drug use even after long periods of abstinence.
Why We Should Pray for Addiction Recovery
Prayer can be a powerful tool in addiction recovery for several reasons:
1. It connects us to a higher power. Many successful recovery programs emphasize the importance of having faith in a power greater than ourselves. Prayer strengthens our spiritual connection which research shows can aid in recovery.
